24x24 Concrete Pavers: Uses, Base and Install Tips

24x24 concrete pavers are large-format slabs, two feet square, used for patios, walkways and pool decks. They give a clean, modern look with far fewer joints than standard pavers. Most are made for foot traffic only, and they ask more of the install than small pavers do: a flatter, more evenly compacted base, a thin and perfectly screeded bedding layer, and careful handling, because a large slab rocks on any high spot.

Built that way, 24x24 pavers hold up well in Massachusetts. Built on a base that would be fine for small pavers, they tend to rock, crack or show uneven edges after the first winter.

24x24 pavers at a glance

• Size: about 24 by 24 inches; exact dimensions vary by maker.
• Thickness: varies by product. Check the maker's spec sheet; thickness affects strength and how the slab must be bedded.
• Use: patios, walks, pool decks and steppers. Usually not driveways unless the maker rates the product for vehicles.
• Weight: heavy. Plan on two people per slab or a slab lifter.
• Surfaces: smooth, textured, brushed and stone-look finishes. Textured faces grip better when wet.

Where 24x24 pavers work

• Patios. Fewer joints make a calm surface that suits contemporary and transitional homes.
• Pool decks. Large units with a textured face and a contrasting border are a common choice around pools.
• Walkways. On a walk two or three slabs wide, large pavers make a bold, simple path.

Can 24x24 pavers take a car?

Usually not. A large, relatively thin slab under a tire acts like a lever and can crack or rock. Some makers produce large units rated for vehicles, but most 24x24 concrete pavers are rated for foot traffic only. If any part of the area will see cars, use a product the maker rates for that load, or switch to a smaller, thicker driveway paver there.

Why large pavers need a better base

• Flatness. A small paver sitting on a slight bump settles into it. A 24-inch slab bridges the bump and rocks. The base and bedding layer have to be flatter than for small pavers.
• Even compaction. Soft spots under one corner become a tipped slab. Compact the crushed stone base in thin layers across the whole area.
• Thin, even bedding. A thick sand bed lets big slabs shift. Keep it thin and screed it carefully.
• Lippage. Uneven edges between neighboring slabs (lippage) show far more on large pavers and become trip points. Check each slab against its neighbors with a straightedge.
• Edge restraint. Big units still creep without a solid edge.

What is different about installing large-format pavers

• Layout. Plan the patio size around the slab size where you can, so you cut fewer slabs. Check the layout is square before the first row.
• Lifting. Use two people or a slab lifter, and set slabs straight down instead of sliding them, which disturbs the screeded bed.
• Cutting. Cut with a wet saw and wear a dust mask. Concrete and stone dust contains silica.
• Compaction. Some large slabs can be compacted with a padded plate compactor and some should not be. Follow the maker's instructions for that product.
• Joints. Use the joint width and jointing material the maker specifies, often a polymeric sand.

Concrete vs porcelain large-format pavers

Porcelain pavers in 24x24 sizes are also sold for patios. They are thinner, absorb very little water and resist staining, but they need the installation method their maker specifies, which can differ from concrete pavers on sand. Concrete pavers are thicker and more forgiving on a standard sand-set base. Whichever you choose, confirm the product is rated for outdoor use in a freeze-thaw climate and follow the maker's install guide.

24 x 24 paver ideas

• Grid with a border. Slabs in a straight grid framed by a soldier course of smaller, darker pavers.
• Offset rows. A running bond of 24x24 slabs feels less formal than a grid.
• Mixed sizes. 24x24 slabs combined with rectangular units from the same line add interest without clutter.
• Slabs in gravel. Spaced slabs in crushed stone make a modern side-yard path.
• Pool deck and fire pit. Large slabs around the pool with a fire pit at one end, as on the Lynnfield job.

Large-format pavers are less forgiving than small ones, so they are a good place to hire help, especially for pool decks, patios against the house and anything with steps or grade changes.

Common questions

Are 24x24 concrete pavers good for a patio?

Yes, on a flat, well-compacted base. They give a clean look with few joints, but they show any unevenness in the base more than small pavers do.

Can 24x24 pavers be laid on sand?

Many concrete 24x24 pavers are set on a thin, screeded sand bed over compacted crushed stone. Some products, especially porcelain, call for a different method. Check the maker's guide.

Why do large pavers crack or rock?

Usually because the base or bedding is uneven, so the slab bridges a high spot or sits on a soft one. Vehicle loads on a pedestrian-rated slab also crack them.

Are 24x24 pavers slippery?

Smooth finishes can be when wet. Choose a textured face for pool decks and walks, and avoid glossy sealers.
